Compared with developed countries such as the United States and Japan, China’s metal packaging industry still has considerable room for growth. China’s metal packaging industry has now entered a period of steady and sustained development. The industry has shifted from a fragmented and backward state to a comprehensive industrial system equipped with modern technology and featuring relatively complete product categories. A growing number of leading metal packaging enterprises—large-scale, highly profitable, and pioneering new products across regions—are emerging continuously.
Domestic metal packaging has enormous growth potential within the entire packaging industry chain. However, the future development of the metal packaging industry also faces challenges: The domestic metal packaging industry lacks high concentration and thus fails to achieve economies of scale, creating expansion opportunities for industry consolidators. Metal packaging companies are engaged in homogeneous competition and suffer from a lack of innovation capability, making opportunities for product design innovation particularly prominent. Meanwhile, raw material prices continue to rise, and resource waste remains severe; therefore, cost innovations aimed at weight reduction and consumption reduction will yield exceptionally significant benefits. Currently, China’s metal packaging industry suffers from a shortage of brand building, with a high degree of dependence on downstream customers, meaning that standard-setting organizations will ultimately hold real influence. Yet, customer satisfaction does not equate to industry branding. Consequently, metal packaging companies must focus on the end-consumer market and create value for their customers if they are to lead the industry’s development.
According to the “2012-2016 China Container and Metal Packaging Market Analysis and Survey Report” released by Shangshangpu Consulting, China’s metal packaging industry faces both opportunities and challenges. To achieve rapid development, it is essential to seize market development opportunities, narrow the gap with similar foreign enterprises, and ensure that economies of scale shift from quantity-based to efficiency-based. Moreover, by leveraging technology to enhance brand building, adopting advanced marketing models, and implementing integrated consolidation for small and medium-sized enterprises through “joint development,” we can elevate and strengthen the overall level of the metal packaging industry.
